Conducted in accordance with New Jersey state Civilian Carry and Range Evaluation (CCARE) requirements for Permit to Carry a Handgun.
This course is presented in two (2) phases: phase 1 is a classroom non-live fire event and phase 2 is individually/small group scheduled live firearms qualification.
Phase 1 consists of safe handling of semi-automatic pistols, personal security, situational awareness, firearm concealment techniques, holster options and drawing techniques. Review of use of force along with discussion of federal and state laws.
Requirements for phase 1: valid drivers license (cannot be expired), copy of NJ Firearms ID card (address must match drivers license).
Phase 2 consists of live fire qualification through completion of a 50-round handgun qualification course shot at distances ranging from 3-15 yards from a holster. A minimum score of 80% is required to pass.
Requirements for phase 2: semi-automatic pistol (above .22 caliber), minimum of three (3) magazines (four magazines is highly recommended), 100 rounds of ammunition, eye protection, ear protection (preferably electronic), crew neck or collared shirt, close-toed shoes.
Absence from a scheduled, paid course can be rescheduled provided that 48 hours advance notice is provided. No refunds are provided for cancellation or failure to attend.
During live fire qualification, applicants are given two (2) attempts to pass. If unsuccessful, the applicant must remediate for at least a single session of Basic Pistol // P1 to review and reinforce the necessary skills to pass. Upon completion of this remediation, the applicant can schedule an additional qualification attempt at no charge.
Initial Steps to obtain Permit to Carry a Handgun:
- Proof of firearm ownership- ownership can be a purchase receipt, permit to purchase or a notarized letter of ownership listing the make model and serial number of the handgun(s).
- Fingerprinting- applicants must be fingerprinted for initial and renewal applications. Visit www.IDENTOGO.com to schedule an appointment. When scheduling, the applicant must provide the investigating agencies OR # (contact your local PD for a number), a fingerprint service code (2F164B), and a contributors case number (Use the applicants last name, month, day, and year of application. Example: Jane Smith applied on December 10, 2022. Contributor Case Number: Smith121022.) Fingerprint results must be received within ninety (90) days of application.
- Handgun qualification- pass the handgun qualification course with 80% or higher score- qualifying score must be performed within six (6) months of the permit to carry application submission.
- Submit complete, notarized copies of the NJ Permit to Carry application and Mental Health Consent Form.
